CONCRETE is a film centred around the theme of “BACK TO SEEING”; to reflect on our environment and see the beauty in things around us. This video focuses on concrete as its main subject matter - how it literally surrounds us and is also the building blocks of our nation. Concrete as a material is an overlooked aspect of our lives that we take advantage of daily and this film aims to give it its spotlight by highlighting its presence in every moment.
From the houses we live in to the bridges we use to commute everyday, and even to tombstones in a cemetery, we are always around concrete.
As the director of CONCRETE, I intended the film to be very abstract. With a silent main character, I had to build the story around it. Therefore, I decided to use the simple theme of life and death to bring forward the importance of concrete.
For the final edit, we used objects or scenes of similar shapes to reflect each other. Firstly focusing on desolate and empty shots, the film slowly gains life with colour and busyness as it progresses. Climaxing at the most populated areas before reminding the viewer that everyone ends up at the same place in the end.
